Support Loops with Chamfer Modifier / by Mario Maleš

Nowadays, there are so many tutorials on the internet that it is almost impossible to post something new. I was thinking whether I should work on tutorials from time to time or not, but in the end I’have decided to do it anyway. Maybe someone will find it useful, and eventually, maybe I’ll be lucky enough to post something that doesn’t exist in any of the gazillion tutorials there already are online.

Anyway, let’s cut to the chase!!

Support loops

If you love subdiv modeling, you know how painful can be process of adding support loops. Well, there is one simple hack that can help you a bit in some cases, and It is done with chamfer modifier.

The technique is pretty easy. Add chamfer modifier. adjust amount according to your liking or rather need, add number of segments ( no need to go above 2 ), and put tension on 0. After that, add Turbo smooth and you are done. Check bellow how it actually looks on simple box model.

You might want to go back to chamfer modifier to adjust it a little bit if you don’t like the results. I usually don’t like how it looks with 1 segment, so I add 2 instead. In case you add 2 segments, even with 1 iteration in turbosmooth modifier, the model will look better. If you can, leave modifier stack uncollapsed so if the model is not that close to the camera, you can either cut the number of segments back to 1, or just use chamfer modifier without TS.

Lets try do work on something a bit more complex, and lets add into consideration one more adjustment in chamfer modifier, which is min angle. You can check in the examples bellow how min angle affect geometry.

Now, if you don’t care too much how you topology looks, you can leave min angle on. With min angle on, segments set to 2, and turbormooth modifier, you probably wont be able to see the difference in render, however, if you do care about how you topology looks, disable the min angle option.

In case geometry is curved, then min angle should be on, and probably adjusted to angle more than 5.0 deg. In case you are working on cylindrical geo, angle of around 25deg will do the trick. (check the examples bellow)

This technique can’t be implemented every time. Some times you will be able to use it on a portion of the model ( manual edge selection ), sometimes on complete geometry, and sometimes not at all. I believe you will manage to make a proper decision. Bellow, you will see few more images where this technique have been used.
